exercise

I want to talk about the difference in two exercises between Singapore and China.
The first exercise happened last week. When we were having lesson , the fire alarm started to flash and make a anxious sound. I am shocked when teacher said that it was a fire alarm, it meant, somewhere in the building caught fire and we should escape now. I caught my belongings and ran out of the class. A lot of students also ran out of the classroom to find the emergency exit in a hurry. When we all came to the lawn in front of the CELC building, some teachers wearing like lifeguards tried to settle us down and I knew that it was just an exercise. At first, I was disappointed because an exercise means that we should go back to the classroom to have lessons again, the long break I daydreamed was gone. Then I lost in my thought and felt lucky to experience such a exercise. Even if I still need to take the class, I knew it there is a disaster comes, where is the nearest exit for me. I assure the rate of survive among us can be greatly improved. In China, we seldom have exercise. If any, we will be informed before the exercise. Since everybody knows that it is just exercise, people walked slowly in the suitcases instead of running out with a strong desire to survive. This kind of exercise is just a waste of time and may lead to people's relaxing attitude towards accident like earthquake and fire disaster. Lack of exercise may lead to chaos when the true disaster comes.
Secondly, I want to talk about the mathematics exercise in two countries. I will not talk about the difference in levels but the teacher's purpose of examination and exercises. Our Prof Chew is a very considerate mathematics professor. He stressed the importance of method but not the result. In his questions, he would like to give us a lot of support in order to make our answer affected only by the methods we used. He said that computer can help us to calculate the correct answer. What we need to learn is the method, which conduct every calculation. In China, teachers always said that " Practice makes perfect." We were required to do a lot of tedious pure arithmetic calculations. The exercise and exam not only ask us to use the right method but also calculate the right answers which show that Chinese teacher regard the result as the most important thing and forget the purpose of exercise and examination should exam whether student can master a new method well.As for the mathematics exercise, I had to admit that Chinese education did cultivate a lot of mathematics talents who has a solid foundation, but I personally prefer the idea of our Singapore professor.
These are the differences in two exercises between Singapore and China. Finding the differences itself is a kind of learning. Finding out the reason behind everything and do comparison can help us become more logical and realize the aspect that we should improve in.

  1. I agree Prof Chew is a considerate professor, but we also need to do a lot of pure arithmetic calculations, especially in tutorial 11.

  2. Everything has two sides, so it is hard to say what is absolutely right or wrong.I think any method that can help us learn something is good method.
