I was shocked when I heard
about the news. I knew that the security in L.A. is quite bad, but I never consider
such terrible things would happen on students.
In the early morning
at 11th April, two NSC students were shot in their BMW. The police
said that they were murdered during an attempt carjacking near campus. Both victims, who have been identified as graduate students from China,
were declared dead at California Hospital.
That is what happened, but it is not all. What shocks me
most is the response of Chinese netizens. They did not show any sympathy
towards the victims. On the contrary, they only focus on the two words: ‘abroad’
and ‘BMW’. Just for the two words, they believe that both of them must be son
and daughter of corrupt officials or crooked business people who do
not deserve sympathy. While the Chinese netizens was cursing the victims and
celebrate for their death, more than one thousand NSC students were holding
flowers and candles in the wind, mourning and praying.
There must be something wrong with the public.
From some point, the conflict between the rich and the
poor, the people and the official was much sharper. People always assume that
they are social
vulnerable groups and bullied by the ‘second generations’. To let their anger
out, they have used to attach labels on others. Teachers must have molested
girls and made lots of money from their students; doctors must have deceived
patients; officials must be corrupted. And now, there is one more label: abroad
students must be son and
daughter of corrupt officials or crooked business people! (Hi, guys, are you
shot while lying?)When people with labels were trapped into plight, those
internet mob just keep teasing and cheering. Their behavior has already beyond
sanity.
The media is also unscrupulous. In the news, they only
emphasize that the victims is dead in BMW, hiding the truth that is an old second-hand
car which is worth less than $10,000. They only emphasize that the victims live
in a big house, hiding the truth that they share room with many to save money. What
media want is to lead reader think the victims are “second generations”, so
their newspaper will have a better selling and there will be more people to
view their website. To achieve their aim, they even leave an untrue comment
that NSC is “university for spoiled children”.
We do not know if we have already been attached such a label. We do
not know if we were abandoned by our compatriot. I only wish, when distresses
happen again, our compatriot won’t publish such a post.
